Helena and Allen Shih’s bakery is an expression of the love they have for one another and the passion Helena found for creating beautiful pastries.
Helena, a Korea-born baker, has spent 30 years working with her husband. After working together for 28 years in their family restaurant, she now operates her own bakery called U Knead Sweets.
After moving to the U.S. and experiencing western culture, Shih became fascinated by baking. Last September, Shih finally got the chance to open U Knead Sweets. Though the bakery started as a small business, Helena Shih devoted most of her time creating cakes to excite her customers.
“People eat with their eyes first,” Helena said “therefore, if I create something beautiful, that will just draw their attention right away.”
Helena and Allen have a special relationship. They show one another compassion each day through their actions of love, whether with small gestures or simply by spending time together.
“I don’t know why. Maybe I am crazy,” Shih said. “If Allen is not around me, I feel like half of me is not here.”
Helena Shih said she is truly grateful to her husband for his support.
“His love and care are what motivate me all the time to pursue my dream,” Shih said “He is the ultimate sweets in my life.”
