Food is something with which every person connects. Family recipes are handed down through generations. Restaurants link alumnus to fond memories of their college days. Comfort foods can make even the worst days better. Food offers people a way to recall memories and reconnect to their families and culture, but it also offers a springboard into a new culture.
When studying abroad, one of the first things people do is try the local foods. It is a snapshot of the lives of native people. International restaurants offer people the chance to go abroad without ever leaving their neighborhood. Food is intrinsically linked to human connection. Breaking bread together solidifies the bonds people have with friends and family.
This project aims to highlight the connective nature of food. It was created as part of a multimedia assignment for J2150 at the University of Missouri. All the restaurants featured here are owned by people from around the world living in Columbia, Mo. Café Poland offers traditional Polish foods made by Iwona Galijska. Coffee Zone mixes a coffee house feel with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean foods. U Knead Sweets is a homegrown bakery that fulfilled the dream of Helena Shih.
This is a living project. Our staff will continue going to feature international restaurants. All the video, audio, photography and text was produced by our team. For more information on any of the restaurants featured, click on the Home tab.
